All you need is... the new Beatles vinyl bag!
IT'S thirty nine years since the break up of the Liverpool super group but the youth of Knaresborough have created the latest must-have Beatles merchandise - The Beatles Vinyl Bag.
This innovative and rather trendy product is the invention of five sixth form students from King James’s School who are currently participating in the Young Enterprise Scheme..
The scheme allows students to run their own company for a year while they study their A Levels.
Sixth former Graham Lazenby explained. “These businesses are run like any other in the real world in which they have to pay taxes, keep the shareholders happy and inevitably, sell a product or service,” he said.
“When Ami Harrison, Tom King, Cassie Watson, Aimee Whittaker and myself took up the challenge of Young Enterprise, we began developing, producing and selling the Vinyl Bag.
“The bags consist of two 12 inch records cunningly connected together with a strip of denim to create (with the addition of some strong handles) a sturdy, circular bag.”
Graham said the product quickly became popular amongst Knaresborough’s residents and the company, named Retro Retake, enjoyed a healthy influx of sales.
“It was at the Knaresborough Christmas Market last December when the link with the Beatles was created,” he added. “While selling the bags, we were approached by Ian Wallace from Liverpool’s famous Beatles Shop.
“Ian took a keen interest in the product and promised that the shop would be in contact with us. This promise was fulfilled in February when The Beatles Shop ordered eleven Vinyl Bags as well as supplying the records for them. These included top selling LPs such as Abbey Road and With The Beatles.”
A month later the bags were produced, sold and ready to be displayed in The Beatles Shop.
Ian and the shop manger, Steve Bailey said: “What a terrific idea they have come up with. We sold the first one the day they were put on display in The Beatles Shop. It went to a very happy Beatles fan from Japan.”
Retro Retake now go to the Young Enterprise area finals where they will be judged against the rest of Yorkshire and The Humber’s enterprising students. If successful, Retro Retake will get the chance to represent the area in the National finals.
