All smiles as landmark town pub begins new lease of life
By Ron Miller
ONE of Wetherby’s best known inns, The Angel, begins a new lease of life on Tuesday as Italian restaurant and pizzeria Sant’ Angelo.
The business venture sees the return to Wetherby, after 20 years, of Franco and Catherine Del Buono, whose first restaurant , La Laconda, in the Horsefair Centre, had just 15 tables.
In contrast, Sant’ Angelo will be a 150-seat restaurant with a wine bar large enough for 100 people.
It’s a far cry from the eighteenth century coaching inn which offered badly-needed refreshment to travellers on the Great North Road, making the long journey from London to Edinburgh.
Two months of refurbishment have created a covered terraza, with tiled floors and a traditional stone bake pizza oven to give Sant’ Angelo an authentic Italian atmosphere.
Head chef Filippo, from Venezia, Northern Italy, will lead a ten-strong kitchen team creating regional dishes from their home country.
Says Franco: “We wish to become Wetherby’s premier Italian restaurant and have taken great care in creating a corner of Italy here.
“Sant’ Angelo will carry on The Angel’s historic tradition of offering warm and friendly hospitality to all who pass by.”
