A talented dog groomer from Harrogate has received global recognition for her expertise.

Verity Hardcastle of Shampooches dog grooming in Harrogate won first place in a game poodle class at the biggest grooming competition in the world, Groom Expo.

Verity entered with a toy poodle at this year’s contest, which was held in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in September.

She said: “Grooming is a massive thing in America, so I just really wanted to go over there and see what is different. They are at the forefront of new products and techniques. Originally I was just going out there to learn and meet people, but I decided to compete. I just thought, ‘why not’?

“It was an incredible experience for me, and I was really pleased that judge Jay Scruggs was so full of praise, as he really knows what he’s talking about.

“It feels great to be recognised, and it is really nice to have brought it home for us Yorkshire folk. I wasn’t expecting to win and I had only brought a small suitcase with me so I struggled to fit my trophy in.

“Everyone at Shampooches has been really supportive, and it was a lovely feeling to bring the trophy home.

“Our clients have also been really supportive, they knew I was going over there and their reaction has been great since I got back. People have talked to me about it when they’ve come in.”

The experience has inspired Verity to go back next year and to continue to push herself.

She said: “I have got to go back there next year. I am really happy, and just so grateful that they have recognised my trimming and my ability. I would like to encourage people, whatever field they are in, to push themselves as far as they can. You just never know what you might be able to do. I always like to strive to be the best that I can be, and I think it’s important to.”
