Young entrepreneurs pitch their ideas
Members of Harrogate Highs Lunae Lux team pitch their wares to North Yorkshire Young Enterprise chairman and MD of Knaresboorugh-based GSPK Design, Paul Marsh.
Budding entrepreneurs from the Harrogate district went head-to-head against other schools from North Yorkshire in an Apprentice-style competition judged by the region’s business brains.
Students from Ripon Grammar School, Harrogate High and King James’ School in Knaresborough went up against others from St Peter’s School in York and Ampleforth College at this year‘s Venturefest, a conference and exhibition for business innovators.
Each had to sell products chosen by the teams, while their performance and knowledge of business acumen was assessed by real-life entrepreneurs attending the event at York Racecourse.
The team from Ampleforth College emerged victorious with their restaurant guide and healthy eating recipe book, winning praise for their enthusiasm, commitment, creativity and use of new technology.
However, all the teams taking part in the Young Enterprise Company of the Year Award will be back in action at a final event in Harrogate later this spring.
Overall honours will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Pavilions.
Young Enterprise North Yorkshire manager Jill Tinsley said feedback on all the teams was positive and different aspects of each had impressed Venturefest delegates, who were invited to grill the students on their concepts, product design and business sense.
“We’ve got another great crop of teams this year and all the students did themselves proud,” said Mrs Tinsley.
“The confidence and professionalism of all the teams at Venturefest was mentioned by a number of delegates who filled in assessment forms.
“It was very tight but, as the event was held at York Racecourse, it’s fair to say Ampleforth College won by a nose.”
The district teams taking part included Connect from Ripon Grammar School. The team were selling a variety of tea, jams and hampers with the concept based around particular themes.
Lunae Lux from Harrogate High School sold hot chocolate spoons and scented candles aiming to to create the perfect night in.
Distinct from King James’ School, Knaresborough were involved in up-cycling and re-inventing unwanted and waste materials.
They created hand-made products including jewellery, clocks and creative home décor.
Around 250,000 young people aged from four to 25 take part in a Young Enterprise programme each year with 5,000 schools, colleges and universities across the UK.
