Work protest in Harrogate

PROTESTORS are set to take to the streets of Harrogate over the workfare scheme this weekend.
Youth Fight for Jobs has organised a demonstration against the Government’s controversial project, which sees unemployed young people forced to carry out up to 30 hours’ work - while only receiving jobseeker’s allowance.
The protest in Harrogate this Saturday, March 17, at noon, will be outside Primark in Cambridge Street, where campaigners say young people have been working under the scheme. A protest has also been organised outside the chain’s Huddersfield shop.
In recent weeks, other companies - including Sainsbury’s, Waterstones and HMV - pulled out of the scheme after it attracted national criticism. Youth Fight for Jobs argues everyone on the scheme should be given a real job on a permanent contract with a proper wage.
Iain Dalton, Yorkshire oprganiser for Youth Fight for Jobs, said: “The government removing compulsion from the ‘work experience’ scheme is welcomed, but this is only one scheme and still doesn’t resolve the issue of people not being made for working.
“Why would companies employ people when they can get so-called ‘volunteers’ to do the same work for free? The unions and unemployed organisations need to build a campaign opposing workfare that demands jobs for all.”
