Who fixed the Haywra Street sign?

High Harrogate residents may have been left with a feeling on deja vu after reading their ward newsletters at the weekend.

Near identical stories appeared in Conservative’s In Touch newsletter and Liberal Democrat’s Focus High Harrogate newsletter, regarding a street sign.

Battle lines have been drawn between councillors over who fixed the Haywra Street sign, with both parties claiming full credit.

In the blue corner Conservative In Touch newsletter said: “For over a year the nameplate at the Bower Street end of Haywra Street has been missing.

“Richard Cooper and Jean Butterfield took the issue up and the nameplate has been replaced.”

Meanwhile in the yellow corner Lib Dem’s Focus newsletter fights back; stating that Coun Amanda Russell said: “I’ve been badgering the Conservative run council for a year to get this sign, so I’m really pleased that the sign has now gone up!”

Coun Amanda Russell said that she had contacted Harrogate Borough Council about the issue in July 2012.

Meanwhile Coun Richard Cooper had contacted the relevent department at Harrogate Borough Council in September 2012.

Coun Cooper also hopes to get shoddy street signs on Devonshire Place Stray, French Street and Stonefall place replaced.

One Harrogate Advertiser reader commented online that he was unimpressed with councillors bickering.

He said: “I’m pretty sick of hearing the Tories and Lib Dems bicker between themselves instead of focusing on what needs to be done.”
