WEATHER - severe warnings in place across parts of Harrogate
Severe weather warnings are in place across parts of Harrogate as heavy rain continues to fall.
Drivers have been urged to take caution on the district’s roads as downpours fall onto already saturated ground.
The Met Office for Yorkshire said: “An area of heavy rain is expected to spread northeastwards across parts of England and Wales during Thursday.
“Given that the ground is already saturated in many areas, the public should be aware of the risk of flooding.”
Heavy downpours are expected across the UK through today, with rainfall predicted to reach 40 to 60mm in places.
In Harrogate, the wet weather is to continue through today and into tonight, easing at around 6am tomorrow morning.
The forecast for Friday is clear, but the rains will return through Saturday.
Amber weather warnings are in place across Yorkshire today - the second highest on the four-tier warning scale by the Met Office.
Andy Page, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: “An active frontal system is expected to move eastwards across the UK over the next couple of days bringing rain to all parts of Britain.
“The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings which means that the public should plan ahead to take account of possible travel delays or disruption to their day to day activities. By thinking ahead the public can be more weather aware and better prepared for severe weather.”
Craig Woolhouse, Head of Flood Incident Management at the Environment Agency, said: “Our teams have been out around the clock to minimise the risks and prepare for flooding.
“We urge people to keep up to date with the weather forecast and remain prepared for flooding in their area by signing up to receive free flood warnings and staying away from dangerous flood water.”
