A violent thug targeted a lone man walking through residential Harrogate in broad daylight - punching him in the face repeatedly as he demanded cash.

The victim, a 47-year-old local man, had been walking down St Andrew’s Avenue at around 1.10pm on Sunday when a small white van pulled up alongside him.

His attacker jumped out of the van and, demanding money, began punching the man repeatedly in the face, leaving him with cuts and bruises.

Police say he was lucky not to have been more seriously hurt and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Det Sgt Fionna McEwan, of Harrogate CID, said: “Fortunately, the victim was not seriously injured in the incident but has been left with visible injuries to his face.

“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about the person responsible to contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”

The attempted robbery happened on St Andrew’s Avenue, as the victim was walking towards Cawthorne Avenue. The attacker, who did not get any cash, then got back into his van and left the scene empty-handed.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
