VIDEO: Healthy Food Week at Willow Tree Primary School
Willow Tree Primary School pupils have been trying to impress TV chef Steph Moon with their culinary skills.
As part of Healthy Food Week children from all classes have rolled up their sleeves and helped create a healthy dish for the school dinner menu.
Star of The Great British Menu Steph Moon with help from Bettys trainers Joanne Baron, school governor Andrea Brown and head teacher Helen Davey sampled each class’s dish and will pick their favourite to be trialed on the school menu.
The Rudding Park chef said: “I am blown away by how good they have all been.
“All of the children in all the classes are so interested in food and ingredients which is great to see.”
Teacher Liz Tillyard who organised the day said: “It’s a great way to get the children to learn about healthy food and be hands on with it.
“Each class has done things differently, my class looked at menu’s from schools all over the UK and picked things we hadn’t had here they might want to try.”
Cooking is hugely important at Willow Tree school with some classes cooking as often as once a week.
Miss Tillyard added: “We grow fruit and vegetables at the school too so it’s good to try and cook with those.”
Representatives from Fodder had visited the school earlier in the week to teach the children about local produce.
Mr Ryder and his year one spruce class took that on board when they designed their menu.
He said: “We made ice-cream with cream from a local dairy and rhubarb from Ripon, we even used apples from one of the teacher’s garden.”
After a hectic afternoon racing around trying all the different meals Steph Moon and her team chose Holly, Poplar, Hawthorn and Ash classes as the winners!
