A landmark Harrogate building, architecturally renowned and Grade ll listed, is being advertised for auction at just £1.9m on property website Rightmove.
The brick monument, built on North Park Road in the 1930s, has stood empty since May 2012.
Now, its future is uncertain after it mysteriously, it has appeared for sale on property website Rightmove
Harrogate’s former police station is listed for public auction by agents Pugh and Company in partnership with The Auction People, with a guide price of £1.9m.
There has been much speculation about the future of the town centre site, and Twitter users reacted to news of the sale with excitement.
Paul Cooper wrote: “At that price it’s going for a steal” while Rory Ffoulkes joked that it should be used to host gladiatorial contests and mock battles.
The site’s brief online listing describes “vacant freehold former police station on a site of approximately 0.57 hectares (1.4 acres) with potential for development”
It goes on to outline a “vacant two storey former police station with extensions to the rear set in landscaped grounds” along with car parking and “a detached former three bedroom house to the rear also.” Controversy flared over the site after Harrogate Council’s hopes to level the building and site its own new offices there were dashed by English Heritage.
The building became Grade II listed in September last year, meaning the council’s plans for a purpose built state of the art headquarters on the site had to be abandoned.
At the time, and English Heritage spokesman explained the decision and said:
“Harrogate Police Station, opened in 1931, has been listed at Grade II as it’s a good example of a style of architecture known as Queen Anne Revival.
“Designed by the West Riding County Architect Percy Oats Platts, it is one of the first buildings to be built in this style, prefiguring similar military buildings built in the 1930s.”
Since then, the former police station has been considered as a possible site for new housing by Harrogate Borough Council, as part of its draft Local Development Framework.
The auction will take place at Leeds United Football Club on Tuesday, February 26.
