Children at Coppice Valley Primary School were shocked and amazed to find a brightly coloured bird hoping around the playground in the snow.

The small green and yellow budgie was spotted floundering in the snow by children on their morning break.

A teaching assistant managed to capture the bird, who the school have name Squirrel after their school logo, and he is currently living in a cage in the school corridor.

Head teacher John Drake said: “We’ve put him in a bird cage near the fish so it looks like a pet shop in here.

“Both the children and the staff have enjoyed seeing the little bird. It’s amazing to see how people act around animals, all the staff stop to say hello and ‘who’s a pretty bird’ when they pass.”

School secretary Liz Lancaster said: “We’ve got rabbits and guinea pigs too so it’s beginning to look a lot like a menagerie in here.

“The kid’s love him, but if someone is missing him it would be best for him to go home.”

Mr Drake agreed: “As much as we are enjoying having him here someone must have lost him so it would be great to find his owner.”
