Commuters across Harrogate are facing long delays this morning after snow fell overnight.

Most roads have remained open but cars are travelling very slowly, with long queues on many of the town’s main routes.

Some of the worst delays have been on Otley Road, at Buttersyke Bar and on the A59 at the Travellers’ Rest Roundabout after an accident.

“Over an hour just to get to Harrogate this morning,” said Emily Rose on Twitter.

David Hodgson added: “An hour so far on Skipton Rd in Harrogate. Made it from Little Wonder to KD Carpets.”

Firefighter and medic Andy Johnston, urging people not to travel unless it’s absolutely necessary, said: “Weather causing a string of accidents around North Yorkshire.

“I’m at a road accident on the A59. It’s mayhem. Please do not travel at all.”

Buses from Bradford to Harrogate were cancelled early this morning. There have been delays on routes around Harrogate but operator Transdev has managed to keep most services running.

Extra shuttle journeys have also been put on between Harrogate and Starbeck.

Leeds Bradford International Airport has now reopened, after closing at 6am this morning.

Forecasters have warned that another cold snap is on its way - with parts of the country facing more snow and freezing temperatures.

Scotland and the north of England are expected to see up to eight inches of snow build up between tonight and Wednesday morning, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 15C (5F) overnight.

The Met Office issued a yellow severe weather warning urging those in the regions likely to be affected by snow to be aware.
