Waiting for Video...

Harrogate Christmas lights switch-on has been hailed a huge success, despite the inclement weather last Thursday evening.

Thanks to the bustling Christmas market and entertainment on offer there was a definite festive spirit in the air.

Hundreds of people braved the heavy downpour to see the stalls and listen to music, which included bell-ringers and choir-singers, St Aidan’s brass band, ForCuba, Ripon band Purple Mafia. plus special guests the Jake and Elwood Blues Brothers and Father Christmas himself.

Harrogate’s Christmas Lights, organised by volunteers from the Harrogate at Christmas committee, is funded by donations from businesses and retailers throughout the year, with a £10,000 donation from Harrogate Borough Council.

Dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress, Coun Robert and Sylvia Windass, the MP, Andrew Jones, and chair of the Harrogate at Christmas committee, John Fox were also in attendance at the official opening ceremony.

For the first time this year, the Christmas lights are being complimented by a Christmas market at the bottom of Montpellier Hill, which will run until Sunday, November 25.

Do you think it’s the best Christmas display Harrogate has ever put on? Take part in our poll to the right of this story.
