RAF Sergeant aiming high on charity trek
An RAF sergeant is tackling the world’s highest mountain to raise cash for the charity which cared for his late fiancée.
Sergeant Lawrence ‘Loz’ Harris will trek to Everest Base Camp in October for Saint Michael’s Hospice in October.
The hospice cared for Sergeant Harris’ fiancée Julie Wells after she was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2009.
Sergeant Harris said: ““When you’re given then news that the inevitable is going to happen to someone you love it’s so hard.
“I just wanted Julie to be comfortable, that was the most important thing.
“Within two days at the Hospice they’d got her pain under control and she was relaxed, comfortable and content.
“The care and attention Julie received at Saint Michael’s was unbelievable, absolutely fantastic.
“It was like we were the only people that mattered, that we were special to them, and they helped us achieve everything we wanted in those final days.”
Sergeant Harris, 48, serves as a weapons technician with 34 Squadron RAF Regiment.
Julie was cared for at Saint Michael’s inpatient until for two weeks, until she died in May 2009, aged just 39.
Now Sergeant Harris wants to make sure that the same specialist care and support is available to other local people living with terminal illness.
Sergeant Harris has completed the Great North Run seven times for charity in the past.
He said: “We need Saint Michael’s, it’s so important to our community and it has to exist through voluntary donations and people raising money”.
He will prepare for the challenge, which will involve 12 days of trekking at an altitude of 5,357metres, during his forthcoming three-month RAF deployment in Afghanistan.
He said: “The Everest challenge is a chance of a lifetime and I’m really looking forward to the physical and mental challenge, meeting different people and raising vital funds for the Hospice in memory of Julie, my inspiration”.
The Saint Michael’s Everest Base Camp challenge runs from October 5 to October 20 2013.
Places are still available but registration must take place before the end of March 2013.
