A monster marrow, weighing in at a whopping 119lb, has taken centre stage at this year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.

The giant vegetable, pictured testing the strength of a weightlifter from Harrogate, was grown by a champion gardener from Newark.

Peter Glazebrook swept the board in the giant vegetable classes, taking all six awards including massive marrow, heaviest onion and colossal cabbage.

Crowds of hundreds had gathered to watch him take part in the competition, one of the highlights of the autumn show which ran across three days last week.

Show director Martin Fish, said it had been a fantastic event.

“We had a tremendous autumn show and welcomed nearly 35,500 visitors across the three days, which is one of the best results we have had for years,” he said. “2012 has been a difficult growing season for exhibitors and competitors, but they have proved more than equal to the challenge and put on yet another spectacular show for our visitors.”

There were thousands of autumn blooms on display at the show, with specialist gardening groups and award-winning exhibits from nearly 100 plant nurseries.

Despite one of the worst spring and summer gardening seasons on record, entries in the vegetable championships were up on 2011.

Three Premier Gold Awards were handed out by judges in the Show Garden Border Competition, with top honours going to Jeni Cairns, from Juniper House Garden Design, Peterborough, who won the Sam Cryer Trophy for her garden section, Contemplation Corner.

Other top Premier Gold awards went to Harewood House, for Bordering on the Edge and Nottingham designer Jason Loh for The Tranquil Far East.

Harrogate stone mason and sculptor, Johnny Clasper, joined New Leaf Landscapes and Baldersby Plant Centre, to create a garden section called ‘O’ Naturelle, which also won a Gold Award.
