Harrogate Lions have set their sights on raising £80,000 to buy a laser eye machine to help people with a sight-threatening disease across the region.

The project is one of the most ambitious the charity has ever tackled.

The fundraising campaign is called H.E.L.P, and is being run in conjunction with Lions clubs across the north.

The machine can help prevent blindness mainly caused by diabetes.

Around 500 sight-preserving laser eye treatments per year take place at Harrogate Hospital and with a new machine many more patients of all ages can be treated.

At present the machine can treat as many as 7 different eye diseases, the most common being Diabetic Retinopathy.

Gavin Walters, Ophthalmic surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital said: “We are delighted with the support of Lions Clubs and think this is a brilliant opportunity for us to provide this state of the art machine for our patients.”

Eric Wright of the club said: “It is a huge amount of money but the determination is there and we are confident.

“This is one of the biggest projects we have ever taken on.

“It will be a hugely important bit of kit for the hospital.”

The fundraising wlll include an Easter Extravaganza at Valley Gardens in Harrogate.
