Lido site houses plan comes under fire
Knaresborough’s Lido Leisure Park should not be earmarked for new housing, council officials have said.
The park had been put forward as a possible site for up to 300 new homes in Harrogate Borough Council’s Local Development Plan, but after a public consultation that closed in January this year planning officials have recommended the scheme is dropped from the council’s plan.
The planning officials are set to present their report to a HBC cabinet meeting on Wednesday, February 6.
Knaresborough town Coun Andy Wright said: “I am absolutely delighted.
“I hope the council do take the decision not to include the Lido site. To me it is the only acceptable choice as if houses are built on it people would be forced from their homes.”
It is recommended that the draft allocation at Manse Farm is instead amended to accommodate 700 dwellings.
In December Conservative members of Knaresborough Town Council performed a dramatic u-turn voting in favour of the site being used for housing, just weeks after unanimously opposing the plans.
The public consultation on the Lido ran for eight weeks and out of 338 responses, 311 were objecting to the proposals, the planners’ report said.
The main issues raised by the public related to the traffic impact of the site, the loss of caravans for holiday use and the risk of homelessness for the many who live on the site, it added.
The landowner has withdrawn some of the land included in the proposals, putting forward a smaller site instead.
The report said: “The landowner has indicated that it is still possible to accommodate some 280 dwellings on the site. Your officers’ view is that this is not possible. It would result in an over developed site with poor form and layout.”
It also recommends the Manse Farm site to the east of Knaresborough as a more suitable site for meeting the housing needs of the town with a “well-planned, sustainable development” and could include a new primary school, shops, community facilities, open space, employment land, and a new railway station.
