Bemused residents have said they were “gobsmacked” to see workers digging a three-foot hole in a road which had been re-laid just hours before.

Work began on a stretch of Kings Road last Wednesday morning, with Yorkshire Water digging up the road to lay a pipe to a private house.

The irony, say residents, is that contractors were working until midnight the night before to resurface the road.

“It’s ludicrous,” said one Kings Road business owner. “It’s bad planning and a waste of money. The council can’t have thought that through.”

Kings Road resident, Craig Parker, 31, said it was bizarre: “I couldn’t believe it. I was gobsmacked that they couldn’t just coordinate the work. That’s not good management.”

This resurfacing work - the second set this year - was only carried out because of a blunder by contractors who admitted using “substandard” materials in January.

Roads across Harrogate and Knaresborough have all had to be laid again with county contractors picking up the cost.

As previously reported in the Advertiser, many residents haven’t been happy with the work.

This is mainly because of a decision, branded “potty” and “ludicrous” by some, to carry out works until midnight.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said last Wednesday’s work was carried out to provide a new connection to a private residence.

“The utility company have a statutory duty to provide such a connection,” the spokesman said. “The reinstatement is, however, very minor in comparison to the resurfacing works we have undertaken and will be in accordance with the street works specification.”
