A Harrogate plumber is preparing to climb Kilimanjaro for charity.
Dean Robinson, 37, is hiking to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and has raised over £3000 so far.
Dean only signed up for the 10-day trip three and a half months ago, despite the recommendation that participants train for seven months.
Dean’s brother Sean Coleman, who suffered from muscular dystrophy died of a heart attack brought on by his condition in May 2012 aged 27.
Sean lived in the Ripon and Harrogate area until he was 19 when he moved to Whitby with his mother and stepfather where he worked in the family pub. Dean said: “Sean was very well liked in the area. It was like walking around Whitby with a famous person.”
Dean will be walk as part of a team of five from all over the UK raising money for Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
Despite the physical challenge of reaching 5,900 metres, he is full of confidence. He said: “I did the Yorkshire three peaks two weeks ago and climbed Scafell Pike in the Lake District last week, I am quite determined.”
“We are all in it together, we’ll push each other up to the top, I’m not carrying anybody though!”
Aside from altitude sickness Dean is most worried about being unable to contact his wife Katie Robinson and 18-month daughter Esme, “We haven’t been apart for more than three or four days in six years.”
The self-employed plumber also sings in a band and is planning a band night to raise further funds at Starbeck Conservative Club on Saturday, December 8.
