High school pupils take over

King James’s sixth form students have elected the group of students to represent them this year.
The Knaresborough school’s student body will be led by Head Girl Charlotte Whiteley and Head Boy Mark Smithells, supported by the Sixth Form Council.
Charlotte and Mark, both 17, were voted in by their fellow Year 13 students after a campaign which culminated in hustings where each candidate had to present their case for election. That was then followed by further elections for the council, when six Year 13 students were chosen: Fiona Booth, Bronny Embleton, Michael Foster, Rowan Gould, Robert Hill and Louise Reed. Year 12 students have also chosen representatives: Arina Fjodorova, Laura Sadler, Scott Stockdale, Chris Taylor and William Young.
King James’s Head Carl Sugden said: “The Sixth Form students at King James’s are a part of the engine room of the school. They lead on the Sports Council, help out in lessons and they are the driving force behind major events such as House Drama and enterprise activities. They are a role model to the younger students and some of our highest achievers.”
The Head Girl and Boy lead the council in liaising with senior staff on issues of concern to sixth formers and organise the many and varied charity events which take place in school across the year. They also chair the main School Council, which has representatives from every year group in the school.
In past years the Sixth Form Council has helped to bring about changes to the Sixth Form uniform, for which they made representations to the governors, and improvements to the Common Room.
