A group of young people from Henshaws Community Housing in Harrogate are in training for the Skipton Triathlon.
The six youngsters, all with visual impairments or other disabilities, are to take part in the challenge on Sunday, April 14.
They will compete against more than 700 others in the 400m swim, 20km cycle ride and run around Aireville Park.
Triathlon organisers Freebird Events has agreed that Henshaws can enter individuals for each element, completing the triathlon as a team.
Henshaws volunteer Alastair Locke, helping to coordinate the training, said: “I recently saw some Henshaws service users swimming at the local pool and heard that Henshaws were involved with tandem cycling.
“It started me thinking that they must have runners too and so the idea for the Henshaws triathlon team was born!”
Karen, 31, has a severe visual impairment and will be completing the running section of the event with a guide.
“I’ve never really done any running before but we’ve started regular training with Alastair at Henshaws College and it’s slowly getting easier,” she said. “I’m a very determined person so for me this is an exciting challenge!”
Local organisations have also pledged to help, with charity Open Country providing tandem training and Ashville College offering up free access to its pool and sports facilities.
Henshaws is now looking for sponsors or volunteers who can help on the day. For information call 01423 799612 or email yorkshire.volunteers@henshaws.org.uk.
