The organiser of the Harrogate Race for Life, who lost her mum to cancer, has made an appeal in the run up to Mothers’ Day for mum’s to spread the word and enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life .

Jenny Murgatroyd who lost her mum Andrea, 42, to a brain tumour in 2002, is issuing a rallying cry to other women to enter the event on July 21 as the perfect way to show their love ahead of Mother’s Day.

Jenny said: “Mother’s Day is a poignant reminder that my mum is no longer here, she was taken too early and is unable to enjoy her three granddaughters.

“Working for Cancer Research UK and encouraging ladies to enter Race for Life is empowering. It makes me feel that I’m able to fight back against the disease that took my wonderful mum away.

“I want to encourage other women to sign-up for Race for Life. Some will be motivated to do so in memory of their mothers; others will have the opportunity to take part alongside their mums as a wonderful way of spending time together in a defiant gesture to cancer.

“My girls have grown up in a Race for Life environment and know about why it’s important to raise money to help other families fight the disease. All these fantastic women are also helping towards mums of the future become grandmas. Something my mum didn’t have the chance to do.”

Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research.

Last year, 2084 women took part in Race for Life in Harrogate and raised £46,000. This year, organisers are hoping more than 2,200 participants to stride out and help raise £125,000.

Jenny said: “Every hour, around three people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire and the Humber. That’s why women and girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are needed to join together to hit cancer where it hurts at the event at The Stray, Harrogate, on Sunday, July 21.

“Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.

“Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.

“Race for Life is non-competitive. So there’s no need to worry about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun.
