A Harrogate school has splashed out £850,000 on revamping its sport facilities.

Ashville College is eyeing sporting success after the installation of a £750,000 all-weather pitch.

The synthetic surface will be used for school hockey and tennis fixtures, as well as county tournaments.

Former head of girls sports Jane Petts officially opened the surface in front of current pupils.

It follows £100,000 investment in making the school’s swimming pool more energy efficient.

Ashville College Headmaster Mark Lauder said: “The opening of the new all-weather surface is another significant event in the school’s history.

“This is a superb facility and one we can justly be proud of. For the first time our hockey teams have a permanent ‘home ground’.

“Not only will our pupils benefit from it, but so too will the wider community as, we will now be able to host some very important county competitions.

“We are continually investing in the school’s facilities, both academic and sporting, and this is helping us to cement our position as one of the leading providers of independent education in the North of England.”

More than 14,000 tonnes of earth were moved to create a level platform for the pitch to be laid on, which took more than six months to construct. In addition, the scheme has seen drainage on the sports fields considerably improved.

The investment in the swimming pool saw the existing roof replaced, insulating the cavity walls and painting and decorating the pool house, which is used by pupils, Ashville Sports Club members and a number of local swimming clubs.

Already, the pitch has proved a winning battlefield for the school’s sporting troops.

Ashville Girls First XI beat Bradford Grammar School 3-0, and Ashville also triumphed in a mixed game against former pupils.
