Harrogate could be in line to benefit from a multi-million pound, ten-court tennis centre.

Harrogate High School and the Spa Tennis Club have submitted plans to build the centre at Ainsty Road.

If successful, the build will involve Spa moving from its current premises on Kent Drive to a tennis centre with four indoor lawn tennis courts and six outdoor courts.

Other features of the facility will include changing rooms, a table tennis suite, gym, meeting rooms and catering facilities.

Exact funding details will be finalised if and when the project is given the green light in March.

Expanding Harrogate High is keen to have the building on campus, in return for pupils receiving coaching.

Harrogate High headteacher Andrew Bayston said: “Our PE department are already starting to focus on tennis.

“Without the correct facilities, schools are generally restricted to playing six weeks during the summer.

“But with the indoor courts, we can play through the year.

“It is sustainable and it could be fantastic news for the future of tennis in Harrogate.”

Nigel Bentley of Spa Tennis Club worked as a Games Maker at London 2012.

He said: “I have been working on this project a very long time.

“There is support from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to get have such a complex in the area.

“We have to generate more interest in tennis, the complex is sustainable.

“Enabling people to play tennis through the year is the only way the sport will thrive in this country.”
