A Harrogate doctor has been named as the fourth victim of the Glencoe avalanche.

Police have confirmed Rachel Majumbar, 29, was fourth person killed in the tragedy which struck in the Scottish Highlands at about 2pm on Saturday, as a group of six friends descended Bidean Nam Bian in Glencoe.

Tributes have been paid to the young doctor.

Dr Rebecca Leigh worked with Dr Majumdar at Harrogate District Hospital. She said:

“Rachel was a gifted and dedicated doctor, who was in the middle of her training. A very promising medical career has been cut tragically short. She was one of the finest doctors I have ever worked with.

“All the staff and patients who knew Rachel will remember her for her caring nature, with a smile and a friendly word for everyone. The thoughts of everyone at the hospital are with her family and friends at this very difficult time and we are offering every support we can to our staff.”

Dr Majumdar was originally from Merseyside and was most recently living in Leeds and working as a junior doctor at Harrogate District Hospital, Northern Constabulary have said.

Three other victims of the avalanche have been named as Christopher Bell, 24, Tom Chesters, 28, and Una Finnegan, 24.

A 24-year-old woman from the Durham area was seriously hurt in the incident and is said to be in a critical condition in hospital in Glasgow.
