The family of a five-year-old music fan from Bilton is appealing for help to raise funds for a life changing operation in America.

Fraser Russell, of Bilton Grove Avenue, suffers from Cerebral Palsy and his family are aiming to raise £60,000 to send him to the Sates for a dorsal rhizotomy.

The operation would treat his illness and help him lead a normal life.

The procedure is not currently funded by the NHS so the Russell family have to raise money for the operation themselves.

More than 140 families travelled to America for the operation last year.

So far the family have raised nearly £11,000 through a variety of fundraising activities, including bag packing at Sainsbury’s, a cake sale, a car boot sale, a bake sale and a children’s party.

Fraser’s mum, Karen Russell, 41, said: “The generosity of strangers has been incredible. Neighbours have passed round sponsorship forms at work and people have completed cycle challenges across the world for Fraser. We have also had fantastic local support from ASDA and Harrogate fire station.”

“It restores your faith in humanity,” she added.

Fraser, who lives with mum Karen, dad Allan, 53, and brother Gavin, 25, owns a flute and guitar and loves watching Peppa Pig and SpongeBob Square Pants.

He said: “I liked the cake sale because there were lots of people there and lots of different types of cake.”

They are now planning to host a Halloween party at Harrogate’s Holiday Inn, complete with a three-foot pumpkin pinata.

Fraser is on the waiting list for an operation in March next year and the family have organised a ball at the Majestic Hotel in February in order to reach their final target.

Fraser’s dad Allan said: “The earlier Fraser has the operation, the better.”
