Forest Moor WI.

Forest Moor WI:

DUE to illness, our planned speaker had to cancel her visit this month, but we were very fortunate that Chris and Mike O’Dowd were able to come along at short notice to give us a very interesting talk and slide show about the work of guide dogs for the blind.

They brought with them Yorkie, a golden Labrador puppy who they are puppy walking as part of his training to hopefully become a guide dog to a blind person. He was adorable, and a credit to Chris and Mike’s training because he was so confident and well behaved.

As well as telling us how the association started back in the First World War when dogs were used to guide wounded soldiers, they told us the financial cost of training each dog, and the practical steps that are involved in preparing a dog for such a challenging and important role.

It must be so rewarding for Chris and Mike to know that they have helped train a dog which can make such a difference to the life of a blind or partially sighted person.

At next month’s meeting, we shall be having a visit from one of Betty’s cake decorators to show us how they create some of their gorgeous confectionary. I shall be volunteering to do the tasting!

If you think you might like to join our group but would like more information, please phone Helen on Harrogate 887449.
