Nidderdale is counting the cost of September’s flooding, which saw a month’s worth of rain fall in three days.

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) confirmed the cost of the deluge is in the region of £3million, and is launching an investigation to find out why a Nidderdale Primary School twice fell victim to floods this summer.

Some Summerbridge primary school pupils are being taught in temporary classrooms as work continues to repair the school, which was hit by separate incidents in July and September.

A NYCC spokesperson said: “The flooding at Summerbridge primary school in September was confined to the boiler house and one classroom.

“At the time the school was in the middle of reinstatement works from a previous flood last July which was also caused by heavy rainfall.

“The July floods had created significant damage with a number of classrooms affected, so that temporary teaching accommodation is currently in use.
“As the floors had been taken up in classrooms previously affected, the September flooding did not create any additional damage and did not lead to significant delays in the reinstatement work and teaching continued throughout. Costs will be met through insurance. The county council is now looking at wider flooding issues in the area as part of its investigation into why the school has been affected.”

The floods hit when Bewerley Park was hosting the Nidderdale Show. However, despite seeing visitor numbers fall, organisers say they have been contacted by show newcomers, keen to come back.

Bewerley Parish Council agreed the Town Clerk will contact the Highways Agency to arrange a further site visit to assess the area’s draining system.

Pateley Bridge had 71.2mm of rainfall between Sunday 23 and Tuesday 25 September. Flood warnings were issued for homes near the Nidd in Pateley Bridge, as well as the town’s caravan park and play area.
