Epilepsy Action make progress

The Epilepsy Action Harrogate Branch have secured a meeting with the General Practitioners Commissioning Group to discuss the possibility of securing a specialist nurse for the Harrogate district.

The Harrogate Branch of Epilepsy Action was established in 2008 by chairman Carl Donnelly and the branch’s primary objective since creation has been to get a specialist epilepsy nurse in Harrogate.

The meeting which will take place at the end of October is huge step forward for the group.

Mr Donnelly said: “Funding is one of the main obstacles, though our fundrasing efforts have been so succesful that we are almost at a position to fund a specialist nurse for one year.

“We’ve spoke to the Harrogate NHS Trust who have expressed an interest, but we seemed to hit a block.”

The Epilepsy Action Branch are flexible, Mr Donnelly said: “The NHS is a great service and the staff work their hardest.

“Extra training and development for existing nurses in the area is another option.”

Various case studies have demonstrated that specialist epilepsy nurses help patients and the NHS. Mr Donnelly said: “The existance of a trained nurse would take the pressure off Neurologists.”

Epilepsy Action is a nationwide charity which was established in 1950 and aims to support people with epilepsy and those close to them.

Mr Donnelly formed the Harrogate branch as his youngest daughter has suffered from epilepsy since she was 11 years-old.

Epilepsy Action will hold a free public event at the Majestic Hotel from 10am on Saturday October, 13 with guest speaker Dr Merran Toerien from York University.
