Dieting DJs from Harrogate’s Hospital Radio are to host their show from a town centre treadmill in a bid to raise much-needed funds.

Shaun Gill and Scott Wall are volunteer presenters at the station which is to celebrate its 35th anniversary on Monday, October 22.

To mark this occasion, the pair have set themselves the challenge of losing 35lb each to raise £3,500 and help fund a new studio set.

They have already exceeded their target - losing 88lb between them and raising £3,671 - and are to host a special show on Saturday in a final fundraising push.

“We were talking about ways we could raise funds for our ageing studio,” said Shaun. “We eventually came up with the dieting DJs.

“We’re both quite portly, and we could both do with losing a bit of weight.”

The pair began their fundraising challenge on June 11. In the 19-weeks since, Shaun has lost 47lbs and Scott, 41lbs.

All funds raised by the pair will help to update technical broadcasting equipment at the station’s ageing second studio.

The dieting DJs are to host Saturday’s show live at the Victoria Shopping Centre, while attempting a 35km power-walk on treadmills.

“It’s our final challenge,” said Shaun. “It will be quite difficult, but we’re a lot fitter now than when we started!”

The show, from 10am to 4pm, is to be broadcast to patients at Harrogate District Hospital as well as to shoppers at the Victoria Shopping Centre.

Equipment has been donated by Treadmill Transmissions and businesses have given prizes which will be distributed in a draw at the end of the day.

There will be floor-walkers with buckets, taking song requests and donations. The aim now is to lose more than 100lbs between them and break the £4,000 barrier.

Harrogate Hospital Radio is a registered charity, heavily reliant on donations. To sponsor the Dieting DJs, visit justgiving.com/dietingdjs or text the word “DIET99” and then £Amount to 70070.
