Christmas drink driving figures released

editorial image

More people were arrested in Harrogate than anywhere else in North Yorkshire during police Christmas drink drive crackdown.

North Yorkshire police caught 31 people who were over the drink drive limit in breath tests, compared to 19 in Scarborough and 11 in York.

In total across North Yorkshire 114 motorists were arrested on suspicion of drink driving after conducting 3,455 breath tests, 556 were carried out in the Harrogate district.

Police had high-visibility patrols across the region throughout the campaign which ended on January 1.

Traffic Sergeant Pete Stringer of North Yorkshire Police’s road policing group said the many drivers were stopped thanks to information provided my members of the public.

He said: “The public’s support is invaluable in helping to keep our roads safe from drink and drug drivers and I would like to thank everyone for their continued help.

“I hope people will continue to provide us with information throughout the year because the fight against drink driving isn’t just for one month over Christmas it is a 12 month campaign. It will continue year after year until people get the message that drink driving costs lives and is completely unacceptable.”
