Charities to benefit from £600 raised at sport night

A charity sports evening opened by Olympic torchbearer George Stocker raised £600 for local causes.
Yorkshire childhood cancer charity Candlelighters, the Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club (HSKC) and Royal Masonic Benevolent Insititution shared the cash raised on the night.
Teenager George had a brain tumour removed after complaining of headaches.
He has recovered to the extent he is now back playing rugby at Wetherby RFC.
With his family’s support, he raised thousands for Candlelighters and the specialist ward at Leeds general Infirmary.
His efforts were rewarded with the chance to be a torchbearer, and when he scooped a Radio 1 Teen Award last month.
The charity night was hosted by The Spa Lodge 7609.
The lodge’s charity steward is Harrogate Advertiser Volunteer Oscar for Trustee of the Year winner Douglas Mills .
He said: “George is a truly remarkable teenager.
“His progress to recovery has been astounding.”
HSKC gave a demonstration of ther skills on the evening.
Member James Borwn recently became European Champion in his age group.
He is now a second Dan Black Belt and won Harrogate Sports Council’s Young Achiever Award.
A further presentation was made by Master of the lodge and his wife, Chirs and May Boothby, of sub-aqua diving procedures, in full kit.
A tote was open throughout the evening with races between piglets rather than horses.
Douglas said: “We are delighted to have raised over £600, which will be split between the three causes.
“More than 70 people turned out on the night, and they all had a great time watching the presentations.”
