Celebration at school to mark its 50th birthday

A celebration has been held at Harrogate High School’s open day to mark its 50th birthday.
Former staff and students were invited back to the school last Saturday, September 29, to commemorate the occasion.
Organisers said guests and old friends filled the hall, where old school photos, press cuttings and memorabilia were on show.
Displays had been put together by Ada and John Shorter and Jean Lane, who have been affiliated with the school for 40 years.
Now vice chairman of governors it was Ms Lane who was chosen to give a speech and cut the cake.
“This was greeted with a huge roar by everyone in the hall,” said organisers.
The cake itself was created by students Joe, Sam and David McCabe´s mother, Alison McCabe, recreating the Harrogate High School badge in a creative piece of architecture.
The Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Robert Windass, visited the school to take part in proceedings before welcoming speeches by principal Andrew Bayston and Year 11 students Alia Khalid and James Nicholls.
“This school is on an upward trend, our GCSE results have grown and grown in the last five years with our most recent record breaking,” said Mr Bayston.
“But we are a school with a vision and are still making the changes; our new building and academy status are examples of this.
“However we will not change how we learn, we already put learning first, and that is already a winning formula.”
