A junior school in Harrogate is inviting potential young grandmasters to showcase their moves at its inaugural Primary Schools Chess Tournament being held in October.

For the competition - being staged on the afternoon of Saturday, October 6 - Ashville Junior School has secured the expert services of two of the region’s best known names in the game, who will be keeping a keen eye on the budding Garry Kasparovs and Bobby Fischers.

Headteacher Jonathan Dolman said: “This is our inaugural chess competition, and we are hoping as many young players as possible from schools across the Harrogate district will participate.

“Chess is a wonderful game of skill and strategy. Our chess club is thriving and it has members of all ages, both boys and girls.”

Ensuring fair play will be John Hipshon, Yorkshire Junior Grand Prix Organiser, and organiser of the Leeds Junior Chess Club and Yorkshire County Girls Team; and Graham Nixon, both of whom are accredited by the English Chess Federation.

This year’s series of matches will be held from 1pm to 4.30pm. Interested teams, or individuals, should email Alicia Coad on a.coad@ashville.co.uk or call her on 01423 566358. Players should be in primary school and accompanied by an adult.
