British soldier shot dead in Afghanistan

A British soldier attached to Ripon’s 21 Engineer Regiment has been shot dead by a suspected member of the Afghan National Army.

The soldier from the 28 Engineer Regiment was shot and killed on Monday January 7 at a patrol base in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

The Afghan National Army member turned his weapon on both International Security Assistance Forces soldiers and Afghan National Army soldiers.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Laurence Roche, said: “This is an extremely sad day for the Corps of Royal Engineers and everyone serving with Task Force Helmand. Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this time.”

The Taliban have claimed that the gunman was acting for them.

The “green-on-blue” attacks have caused the deaths of all six British soldiers who have died during the current tour of Afghanistan.

The soldier’s family have been informed and they have requested a 24-hour period of grace before further details are released.
