Armed robber threatens store staff

An armed robber threatened staff at a store in Harrogate yesterday evening (Thursday) before making off with £180 in cash.

Two people, wearing balaclavas, had targeted the Co-op shop on St Winifred’s Avenue at about 9.30pm.

One of them, brandishing a knife, had threatened staff before the pair made their escape along St Winifred’s Avenue towards the hospital.

Detective Sgt Hannah Wright, of Harrogate CID, said: “If you witnessed the robbery or can help identify either of the people involved I urge you to come forward and contact the police or Crimestoppers straight away.

”I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the two suspects after they left the store or saw anyone acting suspiciously prior to the robbery.”

The suspect who threatened the staff is described as being around 5ft 3in tall with a stocky build. At the time of the incident he was wearing a green balaclava, black shiny jacket and dark jogging pants.

The second person is approximately 5ft 8in tall and was wearing a grey hooded top, black balaclava, black jogging pants and blue latex gloves.

A 23-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody.
