Ambitious plans for Dale church
Summerbridge Methodist Church
Churchgoers in Summerbridge are embarking on an ambitious redevelopment project to expand their church for community use.
Summerbridge Methodist Church has applied for planning permission for a single storey extension to their building. New facilities will include a meeting room, disabled toilet, additional storage and another entrance.
The project, which is set to cost around £60,000, will help make the building more accessible to the wider community, church steward Rose Gosling said.
“The plans are really as a result of the playgroup coming, and the church is growing in activities and inviting the local community in.
The church decided to remove the traditional pews from its building around five year ago, and since then has been used as a multipurpose community space, Mrs Gosling added.
In January 2012 a playgroup began running from the church. and it home to a toddler group, holiday club, and primary school children’s’ group, rehearsals of Nidd Chorale, and recently hosted a comedy night with entertainer Simeon Wood.
The new extension will mean other activities can take place in the church building while the playgroup is running, and will give the playgroup more space to store their equipment.
The plans have been made over the last two years and funding has been secured from the Methodist Circuit, the playgroup, and through community fundraising. The church hopes to raise another £20,000 in grants once planning permission is secured, Mrs Gosling said.
