16th Harrogate Cub Scouts were the northern most contingent attending the Cubjam 2013 event at Gilwell Park, London, the headquarters of the Scout Association.
1,200 cubs mainly from the south of England landed their pirate shops at Gilwell for a week of fun and activities including an It’s a Knockout style contest, a talent show, zip wires and zorbing.
Scurvy shipmates dressed in their pirate costumes and held a farewell carnival complete with fairground and party to round off a memorable week for these eight to 10 year olds.
We are grateful to local technical facilities management company, Mitie, who sponsored the group and provided essential equipment. Without sponsorship, many cubs would have been unable to attend such an event, which included an educational visit to the Greenwich Meridian, Maritime Museum and a trip on the London Eye. Independent of their parents for a week, camping in all weathers and working as a team all works towards shaping these children into the adults of our future. The event is run every three years based around a theme and takes meticulous planning with around 400 volunteers needed to make it such a success. The group now look forward to their next expedition to Walesby near Sherwood Forest.
