YCA News: it was a sad day on October 11 when the last meeting of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Nidderdale Circle was held at Markington Village Hall with a farewell meal. The first gathering took place 29 years ago when members of Boroughbridge, Knaresborough, Burnt Yates, Hartwith, Markington, Bishop Monkton and Burton Leonard joined together and since then the ladies have heard speakers and enjoyed many activities. Sadly falling numbers have sounded the death knell of the wider group although it is hoped ladies will attend the individual group’s events.

Hampsthwaite Show AGM: took place on October 14. Chairman, Paul Hatherley reported that the 2013 show was very successful. Despite the entries being slightly down on last year visitor numbers were high with the exhibits providing an interesting and colourful display. The treasurer reported the show made a very small surplus thanks to the advertisers and those who had made donations to the tombola. The secretary expressed her thanks to all those who turned up on the Friday evening and Saturday morning to take entries and set out the hall. The show is a truly village event and were it not for the way so many people participate it would not continue.
