MEET Bilton’s very own Alan Titchmarsh.

Gwyn Groves, 61, of Sandhill Drive is still pinching himself after his allotment was crowned the best in Harrogate at a ceremony in the Valley Gardens.

In a double cause for celebration, green-fingered Gwyn, also retained his shield for best plot at the Pine Street Allotments prize giving.

“I never expected to win,” he said.

“It really was a surprise, but I was delighted when they called my name out.”

But fear not other gardeners, Gwyn doesn’t plan to enter next year’s competition.

Instead he’s going to devote more of his time looking after his new granddaughter Elsa.

l Pine Street Allotments presented cheques worth £1000 each to Willow Trust Foundation and Action Medical Research for Children at their recent social event.

The money was raised over the past year through various events and activities including an open day, a raffle and a sponsored walk.
