A programme to encourage young entrepreneurs at Harrogate’s associated sixth form is giving a boost to students.

A group of pupils at the sixth form, shared between St John Fisher and St Aidan’s, have created an innovative business using vinyl records to make a variety of products, including wall decorations, bowls, and wine racks.

The group, which has called the business Record Innovations, is now regularly producing unique items, but would not have been able to do so without the support offered through the sixth form’s young enterprise scheme, bringing in LEAP - a charity with the specific aim of raising young people’s aspirations.

Marketing director for Record Innovations Leo Haley said: “This scheme is important as it puts students into real life business scenarios where we have selective roles in our own company.

“We have to manage, administrate and advertise our business like a real company, with business plans, trade fairs and social networking.

“And it’s not a pretend business. We are real people selling a real product.”

“The aim of the scheme is to provide us with skills lacking in modern graduates.”

Leo, who is 16-years-old and studies History, Biology, Business Studies and Physical Education at the sixth form, hopes to go on to university and potentially take up a degree in business management.

As such, this opportunity and the skills he has developed as a young entrepreneur will be invaluable.

There is now an official Record Innovations website, and the team is attending a trade fair on February 7, 2015 at the Merrion Centre, as well as arranging to be at the St. Aidan’s craft fair, to promote and sell the products.
