A FORMER art history lecturer will be teaching a course at the Friends Meeting House in Queen Parade from next month.

Dr Paul Street will be teaching The Northern Renaissance: from Van Eyck to Rembrandt from Monday, September 19 between 1.30pm and 3.30pm for 22 weeks.

Dr Street said: “In the early 15th century Flanders (present day Belgium) saw the birth of a new kind of art.

“Using newly discovered oil paint painters like Jan Van Eyck produced amazingly realistic images and ‘invented’ the portrait and landscape as new forms of art. In 17th century Holland great artists like Vermeer and Rembrandt continued this development and made some of the finest paintings of all time.

“We will explore all this and more. No previous experience needed!”
