Bloodhound boosts engineering

Excited pupils, staff and parents at Gateways welcomed a model of the Supersonic Bloodhound SSC to the Harewood-based school for a day of activities designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The Bloodhound SSC is a supersonic car designed to go over 1000mph, faster than the speed of sound, and break the world land speed record.

The Bloodhound Team were on hand to give talks about the car and deliver a number of workshops where pupils could design, build and test their own Air Powered Rocket Car.

The day itself was part of the overall Bloodhound Project, a global engineering adventure using a world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to enjoy, explore and get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr Tracy Johnson, Headmistress of Gateways said; “As a school we have an ongoing commitment to be involved in STEM projects. Indeed, two of our pupils went on to study engineering at University this year so welcoming the Bloodhound Project only reinforced this. I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Fishwick for enabling the School to benefit from this unique opportunity.”

A pupil added: “I thought the Bloodhound SSC was very intriguing. One day I hope to ride in the car myself. It was a really great day and an experience that we will never forget.”

The experience itself was donated by Gateways parent Katie Fishwick, Creative Director at Specialised Covers, who sponsor the Bloodhound Project and have produced the transportation covers and event reveals for the supersonic car since the start of the project.

The Specialised Covers design team were present on the day to take patterns of the car and to demonstrate to pupils and staff how the covers are made.
