Four people were arrested on Sunday night after police stopped a vehicle on The Esplanade at around 10:40pm.

Harrogate Police Officers suspected the two male occupants of a Toyota Aygo were in possession of illegal drugs.

The 20-year-old driver of the car fled the scene after crashing the vehicle when he drove off as a PCSO tried to remove a suspicious object from the car.

He was later arrested at an address on Lancaster Road on suspicion of possessing class A and class B drugs and dangerous driving and released on police bail.

An 18-year-old Harrogate woman was also arrested at the same address on Lancaster and charged with obstructing the police. She is due to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on 11 June 2013.

The 18-year-old passenger of the vehicle was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possessing class B drugs, he has been released on bail while the investigation continues.

A second woman aged 19 was also arrested but later released without charge.

All people involved are from the Harrogate area.

The vehicle was seized by the police as part of the investigation.
