A SPECIAL celebration of Diwali, one of the most important celebrations on the Hindu calendar, is to be held at Harrogate libraries and families from the town are being invited to come and take part.
The event, hosted by local volunteer Mehul Amin, will introduce people to the culture and traditions of Diwali, known as the festival of light for its tradition of decorating homes and places of worship with lights.
The Diwali celebration on Sunday, October 23, from 12-2pm, was organised following the success of the Chinese New Year family event earlier this year, and will include activities like, the story of Diwali traditions, mask making, rangoli (decorative Indian folk art), puzzles, Diwali card workshops and a sari tying demonstration.
County Coun Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library services, said: ”The Chinese New Year event was so popular with people of all ages and backgrounds, we were delighted when Mehul Amin approached us to provide a similar session for Diwali.
“Mr Amin has run such events for schools for several years and it promises to be both exciting and informative for the whole community, so bring your family and friends for this special day.”
The session is free and open to all ages.
