Woman arrested over A61 crash

The 77-year-old was treated in hospital after her silver 3 Series BMW was involved in a collision on Sunday, July 24 around 2.30pm.

She was travelling towards Harrogate and her car hit a tree following an incident involving a red Alfa Romeo travelling towards Leeds, which landed upside down.

The driver of the Alfa, 30-year-old Giandomenico D’Angelo, from Italy but living in Leeds, was pronounced dead at the scene. His inquest has been opened and adjourned.

The woman driver has been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

Traffic Sergeant Paul Cording of North Yorkshire Police said: “We are still appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have seen the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the incident, to come forward and contact the police.”

His car came to rest upside down following a collision which saw a silver 3 Series BMW, being driven towards Harrogate by a 77-year-old woman, hit a tree.

The woman was treated in hospital and has since been discharged. She was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving on Monday and released on police bail while inquiries continue.

The inquest into Mr D’Angelo’s death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday.
