The former UKIP councillor and Leave EU campaigner, John Upex, found the damaged trailer outside his home on Almsford Avenue the next morning.

But despite the significant damage, which has left the trailer with almost no poster remaining, Mr Upex said he is not upset by the incident itself.

Mr Upex said: "Everybody knows it is mine and most of the people are quite acquiescent if not sympathetic. I'm not emotional about the damage I'm emotional about the campaign.

"When I was with UKIP we had our signs vandalised quite often it's not unusual it's part of the background but it's something I wouldn't do to somebody else."

Mr Upex has had the trailer since last September but has only been using it since February this year.

Police have been informed of the incident and are asking for anyone with any information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
