A man and a woman from Ripon have been arrested following a suspected attempted robbery at a cash machine in Knaresborough.

Police were called at about 6.10pm this evening (April 29, 2016) after reports of suspicious activity near a cash machine at the HSBC bank on the High Street.

Officers raced to the scene as a white BMW was speeding away from the bank, colliding with a police van. The car was found abandoned soon after.

Following an extensive search of the area, a 24-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman from Ripon were arrested on Harrogate Road, Knaresborough, at 7.20pm.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, dangerous driving and failing to stop. The woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. Both remain in custody and inquiries are ongoing.

Knaresborough High Street was cordoned off by officers and was reopened at around 8.30pm.
