TWO men have been arrested in connection with a robbery at a Masham supermarket.

The men, aged 24 and 27, remain in police custody as enquiries continue, police have confirmed.

A JCB digger was used to ram raid the Co-op on Park Street, Masham just before 3am today, Monday, January 23.

The cash machine was prised out of the wall and taken away on a flat bed trailer.

Nearby residents reported being woken by loud noises at around 2.45am and seeing the arm of the JCB smash through the shop door.

They saw two men drop the cash machine three times as they tried to manoeuvre it onto a truck.

The cash machine, which is reportedly only refilled on Wednesdays, was located in the wall of the old building on Park Street.

Park Street was closed through the morning while police forensic officers search the scene, and police appealed to farmers and other people who use land in the Masham area to keep a look out for unusual vehicles.
