Police are investigating after two men claiming to be from the council called on properties in Ripon.
Suspicious householders called the police after two smartly-dressed men visited homes on Oak Road and Kangel Close carrying clip boards.
The police are urging residents to be vigilant and are concerned that distraction burglars may be operating in the Ripon area.
Detective Constable Chris Spackman, of Harrogate CID, said: “I would urge local residents to check the identification of anyone visiting their homes offering to sell anything, repair anything or offering any other kind of service.
“Genuine callers will be happy to wait while you check them out and I can’t stress the importance of verifying a caller’s ID.
“I also urge people to keep an eye on any elderly or vulnerable neighbours and report anyone acting suspiciously in their area.
“These men are well-dressed and would not look out of place, so please remain on your guard at all times.”
